Homes are not the same anymore

Before the pandemic, home was a place to land. Now it’s a place to do everything.

Families are working, studying, exercising, resting, and caring, all in the same rooms, and it’s not just adults and kids. There are pets, grandparents, guests who stay for weeks, everyone needs something different, often at the same time.

Designing today’s home is not just about fitting things into a room. It’s about how the space feels, what it offers, and how it works for each person.

  • babies need softness, safety, room to roll around

  • toddlers need structure but also freedom

  • teens need privacy and control

  • grandparents need ease and comfort

  • pets need quiet and routine

  • guests need flexibility and dignity

If the room doesn't consider those things, it doesn’t work, even if it looks good on paper.

Every design project must start with listening and understanding. What happens in this room? When? Who uses it? How do they move through it? What gets messy? What’s missing? What is something you do really love and want to include in the new design?

If your toddler naps in the living room while you’re working from home, the room needs to support that. If your mom visits for three months each year, the guest room can’t just be a futon in the corner.

Details matter, this isn’t about fancy things. it’s about the right things.

  • a well-placed bench near the door that hides shoes

  • a lamp with a dimmer that helps your teen wind down

  • a rocker that fits your height and supports your baby

  • a dining table that works for dinner and homework and puzzles

  • a rug your dog won’t slide on

Everything has a job - the size, material, shape, and placement all matter and nothing is random. You don’t need more rooms, you need rooms that do more. and do it well. Multi-use doesn’t mean multipurpose chaos, it means design that understands your family. Your routines, your noise levels, your moods, your sleep, your screen time and your down time.

Here’s how I can help! At The Yellow Slide, I work with families who want their home to support their real life. I don’t start with picking paint color, I start with questions. We talk about what your day looks like, who needs what, how the space feels now, and how you want it to feel. Then i design a space that helps you get there.
