5 unconventional ways I seek inspiration
As an interior designer, these are 5 ways in which I seek inspiration to do my work, and fuel my creativity, that does not include Google search, AI image generation or Pinterest.
Nature: Sometimes just looking outside a window or past your phone screen can spark an idea for a color palette, a beautiful pattern or unique texture. We have an innate tendency to connect with nature, why not draw inspiration from Nature - the OG source for ‘inspo’ and bring more of that into our homes?
Listen to the house: Before we go within the walls, it is important to know the story of the house, from the outside. I take the time to understand the style and architecture of the house, surrounding views and topography, the neighborhood, weather patterns, number of doors and windows, etc.
Then I apply the ‘art and science’ of interior design principles to make sure that the inside aligns with the outside.
Personal Style: I take the time to understand my client’s style that has nothing to do with interior design.
A piece of clothing from their closet that makes them feel happy. An item from their childhood that makes them feel good. A photo that completely transports them. A song that holds deep meaning.
Then I find wants to bring that emotional connection to their home.
Travel: By travel, I do not mean Instagram-worthy photos at the popular tourist spots, but taking the time to consciously pause and observe the natural, architectural, local and cultural nuances of a place.
I stop and gawk at airport ceilings, sunsets, storefront decor, wall coverings at restaurants, murals on the side of buildings. You never know what can spark creativity!
Pop Culture: No, I do not mean following trends that change every season, but observing values, actions, beliefs and goods that impacts individuals and communities, over a period of time.
I like to keep a pulse on industries, commodities and services that impact the human experience - think fashion, art, music, wellness and technology. How can your home accommodate all facets of your life?
Over time I have trained my eyes to observe, just take a pause and really 'see’ what is in front of me, because you never know when inspiration strikes!
